Dr. Gary Sigley has previously held positions at The University of Western Australia and Beijing Normal University. Starting in 2025, Dr.Sigley teaches at Beijing Foreign Studies University.

He has been studying China's tea culture and cultural heritage for over20 years. His extensive research has resulted in numerous publications on various aspects of tea in the Chinese context, including its history,cultural significance, heritage policies, and its role in tourism. In 2020, he authored a book exploring the cultural heritage of the Ancient Tea Horse Road in Southwest China.

Dr. Gary Sigley is dedicated to promoting the awareness of Chinas past, present, and future through the study of tea, which is one of his key public service endeavours. He is keen to explore how the revival of China's tea culture can be used not only as a means to"tell the China story"but also to provide a platform for peoples from other cultures to share their own stories through the medium of tea.
